Afrika Filmfestival presents a programme full of powerful titles and colourful characters.

22-26 April 2026 • Cinema ZED, Leuven

Dear film lover,

Welcome to another edition of the Afrika Filmfestival in Leuven. For 31 years, our small but dedicated team has made it a personal mission to give the most beautiful titles from African cinema a platform here. This year again, we are presenting stories that, in this overwhelming flow of information, fake news, and uncertainty, deserve your attention. The voices of these directors and their colourful characters are often heard too little, yet their message is all the more important.

In a world affected by war, abuse of power, hunger, and violence, AFF continuously searches for connection and empathy. With Muganga – Celui qui soigne, we present the remarkable story of a doctor working in a conflict zone, Dr Mukwege, Nobel Prize winner, who continues to fight for his patients despite all dangers.

Smaller family stories, such as our opening film My Father’s Shadow, as well as gems like Didy and Fantastique, also have their place in the programme. As always, we make room for young filmmakers through the Belgian Shorts and YAFMA competitions. On Sunday 26 April, we will close the festival with the original closing film Memory of Princess Mumbi. This way, every visitor, whether a devoted film enthusiast or a curious passer-by, can find something to enjoy. Browse through this catalogue, explore our selection, and find a title that speaks to you.

Want more? With our all-in festival pass, you can settle into your cinema seat throughout the festival without any worries.

This 31st edition unfortunately also carries a sad note, as it is the first Afrika Filmfestival without co-founder Guido Convents. Guido was a driving force behind AFF and a great expert on African cinema. With his eye for talent, he explored the African film landscape in search of the most promising filmmakers. His passing is a great loss for the film world and for our festival. That is why we dedicate this edition to him, and there is no better way to do so than by enjoying the films he loved so much. As a tribute to Guido, we will screen La noire de… by Ousmane Sembène on Thursday 23 April, the father of African cinema.

Between the many screenings, you are of course more than welcome in our festival café for a bite to eat, a drink, and a pleasant chat. Feel free to stay a little longer — we would love that.

Enjoy your visit to the Afrika Filmfestival!
