The Chocolate Case

Spoken: Dutch. Subtitles: English.

Three journalists (Maurice Dekkers, Teun van de Keuken, and Roland Duong) uncover child slavery in the chocolate industry and try to persuade large corporations to end the practice. When they fail, they develop the world’s first “slave-free” chocolate bar, Tony’s Chocolonely, which becomes one of the best-selling brands in the Netherlands. The film combines a wealth of archival material with new footage to reconstruct their funny, poignant, but above all inspiring journey towards a slave-free cocoa world. They discover how difficult it is to eliminate fundamental errors and basic injustices in a global system. But with a large dose of humor and an unrelenting perseverance, they prove that it is not impossible.
