Money, Freedom, a History of the CFA Franc

Spoken: French, Wolof, Subtitled: Dutch

The former French colonies in Central and West Africa have been independent since 1960, but most of these countries still use the currency of the former oppressor: the CFA franc. Today, the CFA franc is still linked to the French treasury and thus to the euro. It leads to unbalanced and undemocratic trade relations of those countries with France, Europe and thus with Belgium perpetuating the European economic exploitation mechanism. It disadvantages the African people and hinders their social development. Belgium has barely addressed this injustice in its decolonization policy.

Since 2017, the French CFA has been under discussion again, thanks to a new generation eager to see the next phase of decolonization and emancipation. Senegalese-French documentary filmmaker Katy Lena Ndiaye, lives and works in Brussels and Dakar and is fascinated to understand Africa through its past.

After the film, we will have a conversation with filmmaker Katy Lena Ndiaye.
