La Pirogue

On the outskirts of Dakar, there is a fishing village full of canoes. After undergoing a very dangerous and potentially fatal journey, they are supposed to arrive at the Canary Islands, in Spanish territory, the "gateway to Europe". Baye Laye, an experienced sailor on the open seas, is the captain of a fishing canoe. He doesn’t want to leave but has no choice. He is taking 30 men to Spain. They do not all understand one another, some have never seen the sea and nobody knows what lies in store. For Moussa Touré, the filmmaker, the canoe is “a metaphor of the country that drifts, when there is no horizon to see, no future”. His canoe reflects the population of Senegal, because the 30 men belong mostly to different ethnicities (Toucouleurs, wolof, Fulani…) but also “a woman”. The men generally refuse the company of their wives when they leave. Touré wanted to show “that African women are able to make choises, to act also strongly and can take risks as a man”.
